Kerala faces a paradox where a large number of unemployed technicians and professionals, including experienced workers returning from the Gulf region, struggle to find suitable employment. Simultaneously, households and contractors face challenges in accessing skilled workers for tasks such as electrical work, plumbing, AC and refrigerator repair, deep cleaning, gardening, painting, and carpentry. There is a clear gap between the demand for skilled services and the availability of labor.
A potential solution is the creation of a labor bank or online marketplace platform under the cooperative sector. This platform would connect skilled technicians and laborers with clients seeking their services for specific tasks and projects. Local cooperative societies could serve as nodal agencies to coordinate activities, generating revenue through a commission-based model while addressing the mismatch between demand and supply.
